Practically Perfect

What a fabulous weekend! On Friday night I headed into DC for a good friend from college’s birthday celebration. We started off with a couple drinks at Mate, and then headed to Lima to finish off the night. I had SO much fun, and I don’t even really like house/trance/club (whatever you want to call it) music, I’m much more a hip-hop kind of girl. We ended up getting a table at Lima and went through about 5 bottles of champagne and vodka. They brought out the bottles with sparklers attached, very fun! Yours truly actually drank a lot, which is a rare event considering the combination of unfortunate asian glow and the fact that drinking usually makes me not so much fun. This time though, it was all good, and 6 mixed drinks and 2 shots later I was still standing! Thanks to KassyK for her favorite drink (that I have inherited hehe) which started my night off right. Lima was a good time, and I actually ran into one of my old coworkers that I hadn’t seen in over a year, and also one of my sorority sisters. My only complaint was those damn stairs to the basement, I thought I was going to kill myself walking down them! We finally headed home and fell asleep by 4 or 5…let me just say that three people sleeping in a King size bed made my Queen seem pretty inadequate.

On Saturday I took a long nap and then headed to my friend’s house to order Chinese food and watch the Syracuse vs. Louisville game. Sadly, Cuse lost in the last minutes. When that was over I met up with some friends at Shirlington to see Notes on a Scandal. The movie was fantastically funny with a witty narration by Judi Dench, although it was a bit creepy at times. Not so much a story about the affair Cate Blanchett led, and more about crazy ass Judi Dench. Still, I enjoyed it and definitely recommend it!

Another great movie I saw was Waiting, which starred hottie Ryan Reynolds. Dane Cook also appeared along with some other C-list actors. The movie was definitely a hilarious reminder of my time waiting tables at various restaurants through college. There is just something about working at a restaurant…sometimes I kind of miss the craziness.

The rest of my weekend is supposed to be spent cleaning my apartment (which was supposed to happen last weekend but another long night out prevented that as well), but we’ll see how that goes. I also need to buy a new vacuum…which is turning out to be a great debacle. Who knew that finding a good one would be so hard? Every review I read sucks, and the really good ones are way too expensive. Ugh. Any ideas????

Anyway, I’m looking forward to this week as I think there are about to be some BIG changes to my world. We will see what happens, but it will certainly be shared!

The Highlight of My Day

So, maybe I’m behind, but I just put the metro map on my ipod! I mean, not that I take the metro all that much, but it’s so cool to be able to look at all the lines and stops on my ipod. Definitely a great marketing idea for metro to do!

Hot Morning Mess is a Hot Mess

Dec 6, 2006 Author: Larissa | Filed under: DC, Music

As everyone knows by now, the Hot Morning Mess at Hot 99.5 is no more. Through much speculation and blog/media uproar, the beloved Mark, Kris, and Teapot Tim said goodbye to the Washington Metro area a little over a month ago.

Enter Kane, the transplant from Florida who just moved (back) here with his fiancee, and I think, a few pets. Now, Kane is a nice enough guy it seems, especially since he’s been giving away lots of Kane Kash.

But, something bothers me about Kane. OK, so he lacks the sidekick and the funny banter that the previous mess had, but they’re working on that. However, I would have to say that his fiancee calling in and him talking to her on the phone, does not substitute for much of anything (as I heard one morning). Kane is trying, but frankly he kind of annoys me. Much of his show that I’ve heard has featured sob stories from people with deadbeat spouses who need money for Christmas (OK, so I can’t hate on that) and also weird stories such as the one today.

Today’s show had a story about a man who apparently suffered a heart attack on a plane from Heathrow, London to Boston. The man died 3 hours into the flight, and passengers were left to share space with his grieving wife and his body for the remaining 3 hours of the flight. A tragic, sad story was turned into an almost kind of joke and discussion about dead bodies on flights. Completely inappropriate.

For me, Kane is just a little too much to handle before 9:00 am. I don’t want to listen to heavy, sad stories, and I don’t want to be all depressed before I go into work (which is depressing enough as it is).

So, my advice is lighten up, Kane. The beltway is bad enough to deal with, we don’t need to further want to gouge our eyes out while commuting to work by listening to sad talk-show quality stories that are better suited for Geraldo or Maury.

Update: Well, maybe I’m just partial to Mark & Kris because of what they gave me. Haha.

More to Come

Just a few thoughts from last night:

1. Of course VA would have a recount. Crazy close.

2. Maureen Bunyan = worst anchor ever. Through the first 15 minutes of the 11:00 news on channel 7, she forgot the names of the Virginia Senate candidates, stumbled through the results news, said stupid commentary about one candidate “winning by a landslide” (I mean, can you just report the fact - that wasn’t even like smart speculation) and also said “uh” more times than I care to count. Seriously. Do some research and learn your candidates - even if it’s just the correct name. I know you’re just an anchor but GOD. It was painful to watch and made me want to gouge my eyes out.

3. Also not suprising is the marriage amendment passed as a YES in VA. I think it’s more than a religious/moral type issue though in the long run - had it been banned and companies had to recognize all domestic partnerships (gay, straight, whatever), then it would have also had an economic and business impact. Employers forking over more money to cover whatever your partner was etc… - so I think that had something to do with it too.

4. Does anyone know what hotel in Tysons Webb was at last night? Also found it funny the Fenty camp was closed by the live 11 pm newscast…the reporter was talking in front of an empty tent that was deadly quiet.

5. Looks like the Dems will take over both houses eventually - once all the votes are counted (and recounted) and in. That’s pretty interesting. How can people say voting doesn’t matter and such when you have proof in this election (and also in the Presidential elections in 2000 and 2004)?

Man, watching returns last night made me again wish to be involved in politics and media. I would have loved to have been in a newsroom last night - or at least at the parties! Haha.
